Their History
- During the Missouri Compromise of 1820 the country began to divide into two groups, the Pro-Slavery and Anti-Slavery.
- For three decades the peace in the United States was being challenged.
- Due to these two groups there was a a line of division created at the 36'30 parallel.
- The Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854 allowed settlers to decide for their state if they would be pro or anti slavery.
- Due to the growing pro-slavery Northern Politicians, Horace Greenley, Salmon Chase, and Charles Sumner, thought that it was time to begin a new part.
- In 1854 the Republican party had there first political meeting.

Candidate: Horace Greeley

- Horace Greeley was born in Amherst, New Hampshire.
- In 1831 Greeley moved to New York City and quickly became apart of numerous publishing ventures.
- Greeley supported the temperance movement and women’s rights, than in the Civil Rights movement he opposed slavery and also opposed the abolitionist tactics.
- He spent his whole life as a hard-working man.
